MCL380
Why the name TYRO? It literally means "a beginner in learning; a novice." And, this is exactly for whom the instrument was created!
The Tyro clarinet was designed with the assistance of the late Mitchell Lurie, clarinet professor for USC and world-renown master of the instrument. Over the years professor Lurie put his name on reeds and mouthpieces, but this is the first and only instrument he ever allowed to bear his name.
We've received remarkable feedback on this instrument, with many instructors and players shocked at how well it plays. They're even MORE amazed when they hear how inexpensive it is - they simply can't believe an instrument that plays this well costs so little! Here are some of the key features:
- Hard Rubber Body - this clarinet is not made from plastic or a synthetic resin, but real rubber. This might sound like a minor point, but many companies have found that rubber really does have better acousic properties than plastic - that's why professional woodwind mouthpieces are almost always made from rubber.
- Leather Pads - student clarinets typically have pads made from pressed felt covered with a thin layer of material that's similar to cellophane. The Tyro clarinet has leather pads, which are much more durable and long-lasting.
- Forged Nickel-Plated Keys - forged keys tend to be stronger than the cheaper-to-make stamped keys often found on inexpensive woodwinds. Nickel plating gives the keys a bright finish that wears well and lasts a long time.
- Excellent Sound and Pitch - the most important thing about any musical instrument is the sound it makes. Almost equally important, especially for a young player, is how well in-tune the instrument plays. The Tyro is a winner on both counts, with a rich tone quality and very even tuning, especially in the critical throat tones around the break.
The Tyro clarinet comes with two barrels of differing lengths (65mm and 62mm), giving players greater flexibility with tuning. The MCL380 also includes a Mitchell Lure mouthpiece, Rovner ligature, a cleaning swab and cork grease. As an added bonus for students, the lightweight case has built-in straps that allow it to be worn like a backpack.
