Congratulations! You're a "band parent". And like many who have come before you, you and your child are about to embark on an exciting journey together. Regardless of whether your son or daughter goes on to pursue a career in music, playing an instrument during their education years will bring him or her a wealth of benefits. Ready? Let's get started. Basic Rule #1 - Don't worry if you have no musical background yourself. Your child needs your patience, encouragement and support.... not your musical expertise. Basic Rule #2 - Expect your child to succeed. Most children can deal with the learning process if they feel they are making progress. Encourage them to hang in there during the peaks and valleys.
Meet the band. Many people believe that if you walk onto any campus in the U.S. and ask to meet some of the most academic, promising and well-rounded students, you will be directed to the bandroom. It's there you'll find an environment where parents are invited to participate, and where students become both followers and leaders. Research continues to show that music education elevates SAT scores, GPA's, and improves math and cognitive abilities. While those are good incentives... there is so much more. Participating in music education helps build self-confidence and a sense of belonging to a team. Music provides children with a positive, creative outlet for self-expression, while in a disciplined environment. But most of the students we meet from school music programs tell us they are there to have fun and make new friendships! You might be asking yourself, "What do I need to know to help my child learn and improve?" Hopefully we will answer some of those questions.
Let's move on to Parent Basics.
