Practical Maintenance Tips:
For First Year Instrumental Music Students
There are a lot of new things to learn, but we know you can succeed!
1. Keep your instrument in the case at all times,
unless you are practicing or playing. That means, do not leave it on the
sofa, bed or chair. Also, it is important to learn how to take your
instrument in and out of the case properly, especially in woodwinds, to avoid
bending keys and fragile parts.
2. Never let anyone else play your instrument.
It is best to find a safe place at home and store it there (in its case - see
#1) :-) when you are not using it. Learn to say, "no" to brothers,
sisters, cousins, neighbors, friends... unless they have already had
instrumental music lessons
themselves. Someone who does not know how to properly handle your
instrument may accidentally bend a key, push on a valve
incorrectly, or knock it against something which can make your instrument
unplayable.
3. Close the case latches securely when you put the
instrument away. That way it won't open and spill out when you pick up the
case. You may think this sounds silly, but we've seen it happen... more than
once!
4. Do not eat food or chew gum while playing your
instrument. Sticky hands and small food particles are not your friend if
you are a musical instrument.
5. Put your name on the case with a luggage tag or
masking tape. That way you can keep track of where it is at all times.
Many cases look alike and we've seen the old "switcheroo" when students have
picked up the wrong case.
6. Do not put books, music or other materials in
your case unless there is a special place provided. All instruments are
made of soft metals and have moving parts that can get damaged from the extra
pressure when you close the case.
7. Protect your instrument from extreme
temperatures. It is never a good idea to leave your instrument in a hot
car.
8. KNOW WHERE YOUR INSTRUMENT IS AT ALL TIMES AND
TRY TO HAVE JUST ONE PLACE AT HOME AND ONE PLACE AT SCHOOL WHERE YOU KEEP IT.
WHEN AT SCHOOL, KEEP YOUR INSTRUMENT ONLY IN A SECURED AREA, OR AN AREA
DESIGNATED BY YOUR MUSIC TEACHER!

Common Sense Tips:
For First Year String Players
1. Do not tune your instrument. You may
break a string. Allow your teacher to tune your instrument before lessons
or class.
2. Wipe rosin dust off the instrument and bow stick
with a soft cloth after playing.
3. Do not over tighten the bow! The stick must
keep its concave shape.
4. Keep your hands away from bow hair. The
oils on your hands will cause the opposite effect that the rosin needs to make.
The rosin on the bow hair causes a friction against the strings. That's
how the sound is made.
5. Rosin the bow as needed before you begin
practicing or playing.
6. Always loosen the bow hair before putting it
away.
CELLO:
1. Remove the bow from the case or bag before taking
the instrument out. Set the bow where it will not be sat or stepped on.
2. Always lay the instrument on its side close to a
wall when not being played. Push the end pin in and tighten the screw.
This will help other students avoid having an accident with you or your
instrument.
3. Have someone show you how to carry the instrument
properly in it's bag. Doorways are narrower than most celli !
